Dementia - the public health problem in Vietnam and all the world

UDA (Da Nang) has coordinated with the International Federation of Dementia Care (IFDC) to organize the workshop "Caring for Someone with Dementia". The workshop was a preparation stage for the establishment of the Dementia Care Association in Danang, Vietnam - the sixth member of the IFDC after Japan, Korea, Taiwan (China), Indonesia and Philippines.

In 2017, the population in Vietnam is over 95 million, officially entered the aging society with elder accounting for 10% population. As a result, degenerative diseases including dementia are becoming a significant issue as there is no organization of dementia care in Viet Nam.

With the topic of dementia - public health issue in Vietnam and in the World, epidemiological study of dementia in Vietnam and in the world and studies on the mechanisms of formation in dementia and dementia care, seminar has attracted the hospital and medical center representatives in Danang as well as UDA lecturers and students to attend and exchange knowledge.

Presented at the seminar, Mr. Shige Shimoda, General Secretary of IFDC, said that many countries in the world including Vietnam are facing an increasing risk of dementia. Aging of the nervous system, especially of the brain can cause many diseases including cognitive decline in the elderly.

Shared the same point of view, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Minh Diem - Head of Department of Medicine UDA shared that the population of Vietnam is over 95 million, officially entered the aging society with elder accounting for 10% population. As a result, degenerative diseases including dementia are becoming a significant issue as there is no organization of dementia care in Viet Nam.

UDA will work with IFDC to train DCE specialists and provide international certification. Students who get DCE certificate will be able to attend to an internship program for five years and then expand to 10 years by a paid internship and work at nursing homes in Japan as the agreement between UDA and its partners since 2016.

In April 2019, the second Scientific Conference on Dementia Care will be held at UDA with the participation of all IFDC members.
