TNU/IAS International Summer School 2026 in Astronomy at Dong A University: Inspiring the Next Generation of Space Scientists
From July 13 to 17, Dong A University welcomed leading astronomers from Vietnam and around the world, together with more than 60 participants attending the "TNU/IAS International Summer School on Observational Astronomy 2026."
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Thanh Viet, Vice Principal of Dong A University, shared: "Astronomy is one of the oldest scientific disciplines in human history and continues to drive technological innovations that have transformed our daily lives, from satellite communications, GPS navigation systems and advanced imaging technologies to artificial intelligence. Following the success of Phase I, which was hosted by Tay Nguyen University, Dong A University is honored to organize Phase II of this International Summer School in the coastal city of Da Nang.
At Dong A University, internationalization, innovation, scientific research and collaboration with industry are among the key pillars of our development strategy. Hosting this International Summer School is also one of our initiatives to strengthen global scientific collaboration and nurture the next generation of scientists and innovators."
Throughout the five-day program, participants immersed themselves in a hands-on journey of exploring the universe through a series of specialized lectures combined with practical data analysis sessions in the laboratory.
On the very first day, participants were introduced to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan and the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) system through a lecture delivered by Prof. Dr. Mareki Honma. They also had the opportunity to observe the Sun using a radio telescope under the guidance of doctoral researcher Hiroto Masaoka.
One of the highlights of the opening day was the evening group activity, during which participants worked together to observe and analyze astronomical data under the direct supervision of professors, researchers and doctoral students from Japan and Vietnam.
In the following days, the learning experience expanded with a specialized session on spectroscopy in astronomy presented by Dr. Phan Thanh Hien, a lecture on exoplanets delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. John Livingston and a series of laboratory-based data processing activities. Throughout the program, participants received continuous guidance and support from an international team of academic advisors from both Vietnam and overseas.
Dong A University's selection as the host institution for the TNU/IAS International Summer School in Astronomy 2026 not only demonstrates the University's strong facilities and its capacity to organize international academic events, but also creates a valuable platform connecting engineering students with a global network of experts and scientists in astronomy and space technology.
For students from the Faculty of Automotive Engineering and the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the program offered a unique academic experience, providing first-hand exposure to telescope operation, interferometry techniques and internationally recognized scientific data processing methods.
The event also serves as a vivid reflection of the educational philosophy that Dong A University has consistently pursued over the years: placing practical learning at the heart of education, connecting students with authentic research environments and international networks of experts, so that they not only acquire theoretical knowledge but also gain direct experience with the world's advanced technologies and research methodologies.
